Relaxation Activities to Relieve Stress
In Relaxation Techniques, Part I, we looked at an overview of the topic of Relaxation Techniques, listing several techniques and activities that can help to minimize the damaging effects of chronic stress. In Relaxation Techniques, Part II, we provided more detailed information on Relaxation Techniques. In this final part of the series on Relaxation Techniques, we will focus on Relaxation Activities that can help you to relax and relieve your stress.
Relaxation Activities to Help You Relax
The following activities can also produce relaxation:
Listening to Calming, Soothing Music
Listening to soft, calming music can encourage the relaxation of tight muscles, helping you to more easily release tension that you might hold from your demanding day. Music can enhance your relaxation when practicing other techniques such as yoga, guided imagery, or deep breathing. Listening to music can help to dissolve tension during a warm bath soak. It can take a powerful stress reliever and make it all the more effective.
Hot Bath
For many individuals, taking a warm bath is usually an effective relaxation activity. It delivers a completely new quality of freshness to the body. As a plus, this activity will not necessitate extra planning.
You may also consider choosing a warm bath with added Epsom salt and baking soda. There are numerous health benefits to be obtained from Epsom salt in your soak including:
-
Increase of the mineral magnesium
-
Enhanced heart health
-
Flushed toxins and heavy metals from cells, thereby reducing muscle discomfort and assisting the body to get rid of harmful substances
-
Relieved stress
-
Lowered inflammation
For optimum benefit, add 2 cups and soak for at least 12 minutes.
Interacting with a Pet
For many people, connecting with a pet may be the supreme antidote to a stressful day. Owning a furry friend has several stress reducing and health advantages. Current studies have shown that, when performing a task that is stressful, people actually experienced significantly less stress when their pets were nearby as opposed to when a supportive friend or even their significant other was present!
Walking
Walking could very well be one of the better relaxation activities that you are able to take part in. You might consider a smooth slow, graceful glide as a way to place your body and mind into a state of relaxation. If possible, walk through the park, in a forest, or on the beach. For many people, Mother Nature has an especially calming impact.
Dancing
You don't need to be an accomplished dancer to benefit from this relaxation activity – just allow your body to move to some music that you enjoy. Dancing helps to release rigidity in the body and tightness in the mind. It's also enjoyable!
Keeping a Journal
Stress can arise when you don’t release or express your emotions. Recording your feelings and thoughts in a journal is a proven strategy to relieve stress and enhance well being. Journaling enables you to shed light on what you are experiencing. Getting your feelings down on paper helps you more clearly recognize the nature of your current struggle.. A plan of response to a difficult situation often flows naturally from this exercise.
Take Time for Relaxation Activities
These Relaxation Activities take only a little time, and are inexpensive and always available to you. Use some of these activities regularly in your life to reduce the negative effects of chronic stress and bring yourself more health, calmness and peace of mind.
